Today: We discussed Plato's Allegory of the Cave. We focused on 2 discussion questions:
1) What is the Allegory of the Cave meant to illustrate?
2) In society or in your own life, what sorts of "caves" shackle the mind?
Homework: There is no class on Monday. Enjoy the holiday. For Wednesday, be ready to continue our story board planning session for the movie.

Today: We watched a clip from The Corporation video based on marketing/branding/advertising geared towards children and had a discussion about this after.

THURSDAY 10/4

Today: We took Quiz#3 based on Chapter 5. We then finished our Chapter 5 discussion by taking a look at Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs & Nash's Pyramid of Leisure to see how they explain our leisure participation in regards to needs fulfillment. To get an understanding for both of these theories we used exercises 5.2 & 5.3 in the textbook. We then discussed Chapters 5 & 6 from Into The Wild. We focused on a letter that Chris wrote to his friend Ron Franz that gives us, the reader, some insight into why Chris is on this journey.
Homework: Read & be ready to discuss the first half of Chapter 6 in the textbook. Enjoy the weekend.

Today: We took Quiz #4 based on Chapter 4. We then did an activity to finish up out Chapter 4 discussion. We looked at developing a Building Program Statement for a new FPU recreation facility. We looked at 3 aspects of the statement:
1) Objectives of the Programs
2) Basic Assumptions to be Addressed
3) Factors Affecting Planning
Homework: Read & be ready to discuss Chapter 5 for Tuesday. Have a great weekend.

Today: We spent class in a really productive open discussion about several issues surrounding the topic of "The purpose of an education."
Today: We spent class in a really productive open discussion about several issues surrounding the topic of "The purpose of an education."
- We spoke about what has been difficult being at college for the last 5+ weeks.
- We spoke about what has been the best parts of being a college student over the last month.
- You did an individual free writing about what you value in an education and why a liberal education is important to you.
- You spoke in small groups about FPU's TeaCH Goals:
2) Content Literacy & Integration With Critical Analysis
3) Holistic Preparation For Leadership & Lifelong Learning

Today: After discussing some "off topic" social issues, we got into a really good roundtable discussion about hostile work environments for women which stemmed from the recent court case which found NY Knicks executive Isiah Thomas guilty of sexual harassment. We talked about the prevalence of hostile/uncomfortable situations for females in the work place and also in society in general.
Homework: Give thought to how companies market/advertise to children. How prevalent is it? How do they do it? Why do they do it? We will watch 2 short video clips at the beginning of classes on Friday about this topic and then have a discussion.

Today: Into The Wild blog post #1 was due before class. I will assess them and send you an email with my assessment and your grade. We discussed the first half of Chapter 5 which focused on 14 different Play Theories. We discussed and defined the term "play" and talked about the characteristics of play. We then broke into smaller groups and came up with definitions for the 14 different theories.
Homework: Quiz #3 on Thursday based on Chapter 5 in the textbook ad Chapters 5 & 6 from Into the Wild. See study guide below. Read and be ready to discuss the second half of Chapter 5 from the textbook.

MONDAY 10/1
IC101
Today: We took the notes we made from our 2 brainstorming sessions last week and started to storyboard out Civic Engagement Project. We came up with 4 scenes (2 scenes for 2 separate issues).
Roommate Issues
Scene 1: Character arrives on campus and goes to his/her dorm room for the first time. He/she slowly opens the door and looks inside to find a mess. Loud music playing, both beds have clothes, food, etc. on them. There is no room to walk let alone move in. Camera shot of character closing the door and walking away. No interaction between roommates. In the resolution scene, the character comes back to the rooms to fins it cleaned up and a bed unoccupied for him/her. Dialog between roommates talking about living situation.
Scene 2: Character arrives on campus and begins orientation activities (get id, room keys, schedule). Minor problems/issues at each stop stressing him/her out. While in line character overhears 2 students talking about a party at Washington Dorm. Character looks at his/her piece of paper saying that is where he/she will be living. Character hopes it is not in his/her room. Character gets to the room to find it packed with people. As he/she looks around, the camera does a 360 faster and faster to create dizzying stress feeling. In the resolution scene, the present day Seniors explain how the "social" roommate although noisy at times did help the character get in a specific class.
Dealing With Homesick
Scene 1: Throughout the first day, the character keeps trying to call boyfriend/girlfriend but phone keeps cutting out. After a stressful day the character finally gets through only to find out how fun the boyfriend/girlfriend is having. After phone conversation character is stressed/lonely. As he/she lays down he/she gets a text message. It is from boyfriend/girlfriend and says "I miss You." With a smile on his/her face, character turns out the light and goes to sleep.
Scene 2: Character misses family. Misses Mom's cooking and watching sports with Dad. Having a hard time connecting on the phone, keeps getting answering machine. Resolution scene takes place on Parent's Day. All go out to dinner together for a meal other than from the cafeteria.
Homework: For Wednesday please read the AAC& U Statement and the TeaCh Goals in the Common Reader Unit 4. You are to also complete 3 Cups of Tea Question #2.

Today: We watched an introduction clip from The Corporation. We saw how Corporations began, how they have evolved, and what their "purpose" is. As you watch the video, and read the book, think about the following:
1) How would you define a Corporation?
2) Should Corporations serve a purpose past satisfying shareholder wealth (profit)?
Homework: Begin reading Chapter 1 for next week. We will continue with the video on Wednesday.
